Nasal trauma injury addressed by Houston Rhinoplasty specialist

December 3rd, 2014 Kirin

Nasal Trauma Injury Needs to be Addressed

Sports injuries, accidents and other traumatic events can cause damage to the nose.  Many signs of injury to the nose are external and easily observed, such as, bruising, bleeding and swelling.  However, there can also be internal damage as well, including a fractured septum, deviated septum or a septal perforation that are not visible to the eye.

Surprising to many, the anatomy of the nose is very involved with many intricate and delicate elements, bone and cartilage. The geometry of the nose is highly complex with no straight lines or simple curves.  Airflow through the nose is a more complicated process than air over a jet wing.

When you injure your nose, there can be a wide range of damage done.  So, if your injury results in any symptoms such as swelling, disfigurement or difficulty breathing, you should seek out a consultation with a facial plastic surgeon, like Houston Rhinoplasty specialist,  Dr. Russell Kridel.

Timeframe for Surgery:

If the injury is extensive with visible bleeding, most patients go to the emergency room.  A wise decision. However, if the injury was not extensive, many patients believe little or no damage was done and simply put ice on their nose, wait for the swelling to go down and nothing else.  Sometimes, patients have a sports injury in childhood and adjust to abnormal breathing into adulthood until they have so much difficulty breathing they seek a physician’s help.

In fact, any impact with the nose can result in extensive damage, particularly internal injury.  If an injury occurs, here is a good overall timeframe to follow.

  • If your nose is bleeding excessively or you have a great deal of pain you should seek immediate professional medical care
  • For patients who notice any moderate to significant changes in breathing or have swelling and bruising, should see Dr. Kridel within a couple of days.  He will be able to assess the damage and help set a treatment plan.  Simple breaks or deviations can be reset within 7 to 14 days.
  • If Dr. Kridel finds the injuries require more extensive surgery, he will recommend surgery for about six months after the trauma and the nose has healed.

Septal Perforation:

In some cases, the traumatic injury can result in a perforated septum, which is a hole in the septum.  This hole cannot be seen in a mirror and left unidentified can actually grow in size over time.  A septal perforation can result in nasal crusting, whistling, difficulty breathing that can be both annoying and in some instances, debilitating.  One more reason not to wait to have an evaluation by Dr. Kridel following a traumatic nasal injury.  Fortunately, Dr. Kridel is recognized as the preeminent expert in septal perforation repair.  But, needless to say, he would far prefer that patients take more preventive and active measures following a traumatic injury to avoid a perforation if possible.

Correcting Damage from Nasal Trauma:

No two noses are the same and when traumatic injury is involved, the challenge is even greater because the internal anatomy may also have changed.  It is important that you identify a facial plastic surgeon to consult.  Facial plastic surgeons, like Dr. Kridel, have extensive training focused solely on the nose, head and neck.  To become a facial plastic surgeon, you must first complete a residency in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery. Then they complete an additional residency on facial plastic surgery.  So, they can address both the appearance, but also the function to restore or enhance the look of your nose and also make sure that you can breathe normally once again.  General plastic surgeons perform surgery on the whole body and do not have this additional training focused on the nose.

For the majority of patients, Dr. Kridel will need to perform a septoplasty to correct the damage to the septum.  He may also need to reduce the turbinates to improve airflow. In addition, in most cases the shape of the nose has also been altered as a result of the injury.  Where appropriate, Dr. Kridel will perform a rhinoplasty to correct and improve the appearance of the nose to match your aesthetic goal.

What sets Dr. Kridel apart?

No other plastic or facial plastic surgeon in Houston has as much expertise or experience in nasal surgery as Dr. Russell Kridel.  He is recognized as a world-renowned expert in Rhinoplasty by both peers and patients and is often referred to as “The Nose Doc” because of the depth of his expertise. Dr. Kridel has been performing facial plastic surgery procedures for over 20 years and currently performs more than a hundred fifty nasal surgeries per year. He has published over 60 scientific journal articles and textbook chapters on the subject of Rhinoplasty and has developed four innovative surgical techniques for nasal surgery that have been incorporated into the curriculum for plastic surgery training. Dr. Kridel is also invited as a featured guest lecturer on Rhinoplasty to the most prestigious medical symposiums in the U.S. and around the world. Dr. Kridel has also been named a Castle Connolly and H-Texas Magazine Top Doc from 2005 – 2014, among many other accolades. Because of this experience, physicians refer other patients, themselves and family members to Dr. Kridel for Rhinoplasty surgery.

Needless to say, you will be in the best of hands with Dr. Kridel.

Teenage Rhinoplasty Can Make An Impact

November 3rd, 2014 Kirin

Teenage Rhinoplasty Is More Common Than You May Think

If you have ever been unhappy with the size or shape of your nose, you are not alone.  In 2012, over 180,000 people had Rhinoplasty surgery, with about 15% being performed on teenagers between the ages of 13 – 19*. Among teens, Rhinoplasty is the most common cosmetic procedure.

With the nose being the most prominent feature, if it is out of proportion, it may dominate your face.  But, the great news is that if your nose doesn’t do justice to the rest of your face, you don’t have to live with it for the rest of your life.  That’s why our young Rhinoplasty patients say, “Let’s change it now before I am labeled as the person with the large nose.” Or, “I want to change it now so others perceive me as I perceive myself and no longer judge me based on my nose.”

Today, having an unsightly feature improved upon is as much a possibility for teenagers as having crooked teeth corrected with braces.  Our patients are amazed by the difference it makes in their self-esteem.  And, for young people, that extra bit of confidence can make all the difference as they begin to establish themselves professionally and socially.  No one wants to be teased and everyone want to feel and look their best.

Dr. Kridel has performed thousands of rhinoplasty surgeries, often referred to as a “nose job”, and often finds that he needs to correct airway problems inside while he is correct the outside shape, so the nose not only looks good but also breathes well.  Sometimes, he will further improve the profile with a chin implant, because a weak chin can make a nose look even larger.

When Your Nose Doesn’t Fit Your Face

A less than desirable inherited feature is the primary reason patients, including teenagers, seek cosmetic improvement of their nose.  However, sports injuries or nasal trauma, is also very common.  In these circumstances, there is often internal damage, such as a deviated septum, that can hinder your ability to breathe.  A severely deviated septum can also alter the external appearance of the nose.  It is far more effective and efficient to address any desired cosmetic changes at the same time as correcting internal damage.  Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Diana Agron have improved the appearance of their nose in addition to repairing internal structural damage.

Everyone wants to know what their nose is going to look like after surgery.  To help with that visualization, Dr. Kridel does digital computer imaging so patients can sit down and visually plan the goal for their surgery.  Dr. Kridel understands that no two noses are the same, so he tailors the cosmetic change based on each patient’s individual anatomy and goals. He does not and will not take a one size fits all approach.

Dr. Kridel is a world renowned facial plastic surgeon and has published over 70 medical journal articles and textbook chapters about Rhinoplasty and Revision Rhinoplasty. He performs more than 150 Rhinopolasty surgeries every year.  Within the medical and patient community, he is often referred to as “THE Nose Doc,” because of his recognized expertise in nasal surgery. Patients and physicians refer themselves and their own family members and friends because of his international reputation as one of the best Rhinoplasty surgeons in the world.  Dr. Kridel is also invited as a featured guest lecturer to the largest and most prestigious plastic surgery courses every year to share his specific techniques with other surgeons who want to improve their skills.  He has  been named to numerous Top Doc lists year after year and has received the highest honors from his own specialty for surgical excellence.

Helpful Rhinoplasty Consultation Checklist

September 28th, 2014 Kirin

RHINOPLASTY CONSULTATION CHECKLIST IS INVALUABLE TO PATIENTS

When you decide to proceed with a Rhinoplasty (or nose job) after a great deal of thought and consideration, the next step is to have a consultation with a plastic surgeon.  This next phase of your quest for the perfect nose is one of the most important.  Follow this Rhinoplasty Consultation Checklist to help you identify the best facial plastic surgeon and gain confidence in a having a successful surgery.

SELECTING A SURGEON TO CONSULT

It is critical that you select a facial plastic surgeon, like Dr. Russell Kridel, who specializes in surgery from the neck up.  Look for surgeons who are board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).  To become board certified by the ABFPRS, the surgeon must have completed years of additional training strictly in the head and neck area, including a prestigious Fellowship and completed over 100 peer-reviewed surgical cases and they are double-board certified. You can go to the ABFPRS website to find a list of surgeons in your community.

Next, seek out facial plastic surgeons who have published scientific medical journal articles and given lectures at medical conferences specifically on Rhinoplasty surgical techniques.  These surgeons are recognized by their peers in the medical community as experts in Rhinoplasty.  You can identify these surgeons by looking at their resumes on their websites.

You also want to select a specialist, like Dr. Russell Kridel, who does at least 100 noses every year.  Because no two noses are alike it takes a skilled and experienced surgeon to be able to tailor a surgical approach specifically for you.  Ask this question before you book a consultation.

Sadly, there are many physicians who perform cosmetic surgery procedures, but do not have advanced specialty training.  So, it is important that you do your homework on selecting a specialist to consult. Depending on the size of the community that you live in, you should consult with 2 or 3 facial plastic surgeons.

Bottom line: only trust your nose and your face to a facial plastic surgery specialist.

PREPARING FOR THE CONSULTATION

Before your consultation, list out your medical history. Start by including your current and past medical conditions, any known drug allergies, and any previous medical treatments. Any of these could increase your risk factors during Rhinoplasty or cause delayed healing. Also, make a list of your current medications, vitamins and herbal supplements, and your usage of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Previous surgeries will also be a key discussion point during your consultation, so include even minor operations on other parts of the body. In addition, make a list of what bothers you about your nose and what you want from your Rhinoplasty surgery.  At FPSA, we provide you with special patient forms that help you walk through all of this important information to share with your surgeon.  You will either send back the forms in advance of your consultation or bring with you to your consultation with Dr. Kridel.

THE CONSULTATION

When you visit more than one surgeon for a consultation you will find similarities and differences between each practice.  As a result, you will also be able to identify the surgeon that you feel most comfortable with to perform your surgery.

At FPSA, we believe you will experience the most thorough Rhinoplasty consultation of any other cosmetic surgeon in Houston.  We take great pride in providing patients with the information and time they need for such an important decision.  When you come in for a consultation, you will be with us for 2 to 2.5 hours.   During that time, Dr. Kridel will do a thorough examination of your nose and you will also have a special Rhinometry test to evaluate your airflow function for breathing.  If your breathing is compromised, Dr. Kridel will help make sure that your nose looks fantastic and that you can breathe well. During your consultation we will also take photos and then through digital computer imaging and review with Dr. Kridel determine what you can expect from your Rhinoplasty surgery. You will also view an informative video about the surgery and be able to look at a very extensive library of before and after photos of other Rhinoplasty patients of Dr. Kridel’s that are not available online.

While the focus of the consultation is on you and your nose, Dr. Kridel wants your input about what bothers you about your current nose and about the nose you’d like to have when your rhinoplasty is finished. Feel free to ask Dr. Kridel, the clinicial staff or office staff any question.  As they say, there is no such thing as a wrong or dumb question. The only way to guarantee successful results in line with your own desires is to share your thoughts and concerns with Dr. Kridel and our staff. From these discussion and expectations, Dr. Kridel will design the best surgical plan for your nose to create the most pleasing, proportional, and appropriate shape specific to you. After the consultation, you will meet with the patient coordinator to review costs and set a surgical date together that allows enough recovery time for you.

Selfies and Plastic Surgery Are Linked

July 10th, 2014 Dr. Russell Kridel

Selfies and Plastic Surgery Requests Are Linked

Selfies and Rhinoplasty Surgery

While we all look at ourselves in the mirror every day, with Selfies, many people also check their looks on their mobile phones multiple times a day.In many ways, the growing trends of placing Selfies on social media platforms like Snapchat, Instagram and Tumblr, create greater demand for people to look the best they possibly can. Because these images are presented to the vast online world, people set a high standard for themselves of how they should look.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Requests Have Increased With Selfie Culture

The Selfie culture has shifted the focus of our interactions to a very visual level. Suddenly, facial flaws seem magnified and the need for plastic surgery procedures, like nasal surgery, known as Rhinoplasty, becomes more apparent. Your nose is a dominant feature of your face and any flaws that may concern you feel magnified on social media particularly, profile or three-quarter views. Increasingly, People seek Rhinoplasty surgery, commonly referred to as a nose job, to resolve many of their unwanted nasal features. In a March, 2014 survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), they found that the Selfie trend increases demand for facial plastic surgery, particularly for Rhinoplasty surgery. Many people, primarily those between 18 and 34, are looking for an edge to create a picture-perfect face and share it with the world. For example, shaving down a nasal bump or straightening a twisted nose can make the face look more symmetric from all directions.

“Imaged-based social media forces patients to look at their image with a more critical eye.  They want to make sure they look their very best to the online world, particularly to friends and loved ones, current or potential.  So it is completely understandable why we are seeing more younger patients seeking cosmetic procedures,” stated Houston facial plastic surgeon Dr. Russell Kridel.

If looking at your collection of selfies uncovers features you have always disliked about yourself, your reason to have Rhinoplasty surgery is no less valid than someone who broke their nose multiple times. The intensity of your dislike might be increased due to the amount of photos you are faced with daily, but it doesn’t change the fact that you don’t like your nose.

Importance of Selecting a Facial Plastic Surgeon for Cosmetic Nasal Surgery

However, it is still critically important to select the best surgeon for your nose job.  There is a difference!  First of all, you need to select a facial plastic surgeon, like Dr. Russell Kridel,  because facial plastic surgeons specialize in the head and neck area and have additional training specific to noses.  You will not only have a better looking nose, but care will be taken to make sure you can breathe well out of it as well.

During your consultation, Dr. Kridel will talk about what you don’t like about your nose and what lead you to decide that Rhinoplasty could be a good option. He will evaluate your physical health, your facial features and your nasal features. In addition, computer imaging will be done, so that you can get a realistic idea of what your nose will look like after surgery. Every nose is different, so the goal for rhinoplasty surgery is to create an improved nasal shape that is proportionate to your specific face.  It is not appropriate to want your nose to look just like a favorite celebrity.  “If you ask for Taylor Swift’s nose, I will tell you to select a different surgeon,” said Dr. Kridel.  To look your best so that you can achieve your goal of being the best you and therefore, an even better selfie, is a realistic approach and you will be thrilled with the results.

Dr. Kridel performs more than one hundred nose surgeries (Rhinoplasty) every year. He has published over 50 scientific medical journal articles on nasal surgery and has developed surgical techniques for Rhinoplasty that are now taught in medical schools around the world.  Dr. Kridel is referred by many fellow surgeons as “The Nose Doc” because of his expertise and internationally recognized surgical skills in Rhinoplasty.

Best Rhinoplasty Surgeon in Houston

January 30th, 2014 Kirin

Who is the Best Rhinoplasty Surgeon in Houston?

From cocktail parties to book club gatherings, I am frequently asked questions about Rhinoplasty Surgery. And, the most common question is —“Who is the best Rhinoplasty Surgeon in Houston”?

Best Rhinoplasty Surgeon

There is no question in my mind that Dr. Russell Kridel is the best rhinoplasty surgeon in Houston.  And to be quite honest, one of the best in the world. Certainly there are other talented surgeons, and yes, I am biased.  But, I can readily and objectively support my point of view.

  1. Dr. Kridel has authored more than 60 textbook chapters and scientific journal articles on Rhinoplasty.  No one else in Houston, or Texas, has written so extensively on the subject.
  2. Dr. Kridel has been invited to be a featured speaker to hundreds of national and international medical conferences to teach other physicians about his Rhinoplasty techniques.
  3. Dr. Kridel has pioneered more than 4 specific surgical techniques used in Rhinoplasty that are now standard elements of medical school training.
  4. Dr. Kridel was singled out and lauded by the AMA Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery medical journal editor that his article on the Long Term Use of Irradiated Costal Cartilage Grafts in the Nose” as a landmark study.  Very few surgeons ever achieve this accolade.
  5. Dr. Kridel has been given the two highest awards by his own specialty, American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) for his surgical excellence in facial plastic surgery, including Rhinoplasty
  6. Dr. Kridel held his own course, Rodeo Rhinoplasty, for two years, in Houston.  Over 200 surgeons attended from all over the world to hone their skills in Rhinoplasty under the auspices of Dr. Kridel (along with other invited specialists).
  7. No other surgeon in town provides the same level of pre and post-operative care and followup as Dr. Kridel. You may spend 2 or more hours at your  consultation appointment, but no other local cosmetic surgeon is as thorough.
  8. He has won Top Doc accolades annually for over ten years from H-Texas Magazine, Castle Connolly and Best Doctors among others.

Importantly, if you ask other surgeons the same question — “Who is the Best Rhinoplasty Surgeon in Houston“, you will get the same answer:  Dr. Russell Kridel.  Needless to say, other physicians view Dr. Kridel as “The Doctor’s Doctor” or as some say, “The Nose Doc”.  They entrust their own noses and their family member’s noses to Dr. Kridel.

I would encourage anyone to ask our patient coordinator, Linda Estrada, to speak with a Facial Plastic Surgery Associate Rhinoplasty patient ambassador.  These are patients who have had Rhinoplasty surgery with Dr. Kridel and are happy to speak with any patient thinking of having a similar surgery.  We started this program because numerous patients of Dr. Kridel’s requested to be ambassadors to other patients because they feel very strongly that others considering this surgery understand the value of Dr. Kridel’s experience and surgical skills.  As one patient stated, “I would want someone to do the same for me.  Make sure that I am in the best possible hands, because nothing would be worse than having someone mess up my nose.”

And, flat out, Dr. Kridel loves doing Rhinoplasty surgery.  No two noses are exactly alike, so it is always exciting and very rewarding for Dr. Kridel when patients achieve the improved appearance they desire that looks so natural — as if they were born with their new nose. Needless to say, you are in the best hands with Dr. Kridel.

Rhinoplasty consultation: what to expect

November 30th, 2013 Kirin

Many patients do not know what to expect from a Rhinoplasty consultation.  The truth is that a Rhinoplasty consultation will vary from surgeon to surgeon.

So, it is important that patients understand what to look for during their Rhinoplasty consultation to help them identify the best possible surgeon for their procedure. At Facial Plastic Surgery Associates, you can expect to spend 1.5 to 2 hours for your consultation with Dr. Russell Kridel.

As Dr. Kridel says, “no two noses are alike,” so it is important to do an in-depth consultation, including a very thorough examination to provide patients with a treatment plan that is designed specifically for them to achieve their desired result.

Rhinoplasty Consultation with Dr. Russell Kridel:

Prior to your consultation, you will complete several forms, including a questionnaire that helps you think through why you want to have surgery, what bothers you most about your nose and what you expect from your surgery.  Surgery of any type is a big step and should not be taken lightly.  So, both you and your surgeon should be “on the same page.”

Office lobby for Dr. Russell Kridel

Dr. Russell Kridel facial plastic surgery practice in the Texas Medical Center

When you arrive at our beautiful offices in the Texas Medical Center, one of our fabulous staff members will take pictures of your nose from multiple angles.  Dr. Kridel and his team will then use computer software to image your photos to show you what you can expect your nose to look like after Rhinoplasty surgery.  Next, you will meet with our patient coordinator to review the extensive before and after photo books, as well as share any questions or concerns you may have about Rhinoplasty surgery.

Dr. Kridel will do a thorough examination of your nose and will have a conversation with you about your nose and nasal surgery.  You should feel free to ask questions and share any concerns you may have, whether it is about difficulty breathing, the current appearance of your nose or the surgical technique he recommends.  Dr. Kridel is very approachable and happy to answer any of your questions about Rhinoplasty.

You will also have a Rhinometry test done. Rhinometry is a diagnostic measurement of the nose through acoustic reflections.  It evaluates nasal obstruction by analyzing reflections of a sound pulse introduced via the nostrils. The technique is fast, non-invasive and does not require the patient to do anything special. As an objective screening and evaluation test, Rhinometry will further help to identify or confirm that a patient may have a deviated septum, hypertrophied turbinates or other types of upper airway obstruction that may need to be addressed during surgery. At Facial Plastic Surgery Associates, we are one of the few plastic surgery offices in Houston that performs this additional examination.  Why?  Because Dr. Kridel feels it is imperative that patients not only look great, but they can also breathe well following Rhinoplasty surgery.

Many Rhinoplasty surgeons only deal with the aesthetic component.  This is one of the key differences when you have a Rhinoplasty consultation with Dr. Kridel. He deals with both the functional and the aesthetic components of your nose.  Because he is double board certified by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery and the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, he has significant depth of training and experience in the anatomy of the nose, face and neck, as well as plastic surgery techniques.  In fact, Dr. Kridel has been awarded the top honors for surgical excellence by his peers and has published over 60 scientific journal articles just on Rhinoplasty.

Following your Rhinometry test, Dr. Kridel will discuss the test results and review your imaged photos.  You will be able to see and discuss with him what you can expect your nose to look like following Rhinoplasty surgery. Dr. Kridel takes these photos into surgery with him as well.

Our nurse will also discuss with you pre-operative and post-operative instructions and you will watch a video about nasal surgery.   Our patient coordinator will review the the recommended treatment plans and estimated costs for surgery as well.

So, as you can see, not every Rhinoplasty consultation is created equal.  Dr. Kridel is extremely thorough and is highly regarded throughout Houston and internationally as a Rhinoplasty expert.  It is also why he is often referred to as THE Nose Doctor or The Doctor’s Doctor.

November 5th, 2013 Kirin

Rhinoplasty and Computer Imaging go hand in hand. At Facial Plastic Surgery Associates, one of the most important parts of your nasal surgery consultation with Dr. Russell Kridel is Rhinoplasty computer imaging.

Rhinoplasty Computer Imaging:

We take numerous photos of your nose prior to your thorough medical examination with Dr. Kridel.  Then, during your visit with Dr. Kridel you will not only have an opportunity to share your concerns with him, but he will also ask you questions as well.  It is this back and forth conversation that helps him understand your goal for surgery.  He will then use a Rhinoplasty computer imaging software tool to morph the original photos to help you visualize your potential surgical result.  Dr. Kridel will review the imaged photos with you so that both of you will have a similar goal in mind.  At the time of surgery, Dr. Kridel takes a copy of the imaged photos in with him to surgery.

Dr Russell Kridel comments on Kate Middleton's nose

“Kate’s nose is the #1 requested nose,” says Dr. Russell Kridel.

Rhinoplasty computer imaging is a far more valuable tool than photographs from magazines.  It is not uncommon for patients to bring photos of celebrities with them to the consultation.  While it certainly provides a platform for discussion, Dr. Kridel prides himself in fitting a nose specifically to the individual and their anatomical features rather than one nose fits all or a nose that matches a different person’s face.  With the growing popularity of the young royal family, the “Kate Middleton Nose” is currently the most popular request.  But, as Dr. Kridel says, “Kate’s nose is meant for Kate, let’s make sure your nose looks like it is meant for you.”

Dr. Russell Kridel is often referred to as THE Nose Doctor, by other surgeons.  He has pioneered multiple Rhinoplasty surgical techniques now used in medical schools and has written over 60 scientific medical journal articles and textbook chapters on Rhinoplasty.
